Frequently Asked Questions
What happens in my first session? Do you start psychotherapy techniques immediately?
The first 1 - 2 sessions focus on understanding your history, current concerns, and goals. We use structured conversation and probing to map root causes (both conscious and subconscious). Psychotherapy techniques generally start after this assessment phase-not in the first session.
When will I start seeing results, and how many sessions will I need?
Most clients begin noticing change once processing starts-typically within 5 - 10 sessions. On average, many report positive effects around 10 sessions, and quite a number feel better after roughly 3 - 4 months of consistent counselling. Some prefer a longer plan (e.g., weekly for ~6 months) to consolidate gains. Your pace will be personalised.
How long is each counselling session?
Most sessions are 60 or 90 minutes. This allows enough time for meaningful work without feeling rushed.
What psychotherapy techniques do you use during counselling?
We use an integrative psychotherapy approach to match your needs and maximise results:
- EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing)
- Schema Therapy
- Gestalt Therapy
- Bibliotherapy
- Psychodynamic therapy
- Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy
- Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT)
- Interpersonal therapy (IPT)
- Attachment-informed therapy
No single modality “wins” in every scenario-blending lets us tap the strengths of each.
Why integrate multiple modalities instead of using only CBT?
CBT is excellent for psychoeducation and reframing thoughts, but it often relies on conscious effort and homework many find hard to sustain. Integrating approaches (e.g., EMDR, Schema, Gestalt) also targets subconscious beliefs and stored emotional memories - so change is felt, not just reasoned.
What is the difference between counselling and therapy?
They overlap. Counselling often focuses on short-term, practical goals (stress, grief, relationship skills). Therapy (psychotherapy) typically goes deeper and longer, exploring patterns and past experiences that still influence today.
When should I see a counsellor or therapist?
If something interferes with daily life or causes emotional distress, it's a good time to seek help. Signs include sleep changes, social withdrawal, persistent low mood/anxiety, or using unhealthy coping strategies. Counselling in Singapore can benefit anyone-not only those with a formal diagnosis.
How long do people typically continue counselling?
Duration varies by goals and severity. Many feel better after 3 - 4 months; others continue longer (e.g., weekly for ~6 months) to work on deeper patterns or multiple themes.
